It is contested by the men's national teams of the members of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), the sport's European governing body, and takes place every four years. The winners of the first final were the Soviet Union, who defeated Yugoslavia 21 wijners Paris, after extra time.
The most recent final, hosted in Paris in 2016, was won by Portugal, who beat France 10 after extra time. The European Champipnship final is the last match of the competition, and the result determines which country's team is declared European champion. As of the 2016 tournament, if after 90 minutes of regular play the score is a draw, an wwinners 30-minute period of play, called extra time, is added.
If such a game is still tied after extra time, it is decided by penalty shoot-out. The team that wins the penalty shoot-out are then declared champions. [1] The 15 finals to-date have produced five drawn matches, the cgampionship winners of which have been determined euripean by replay (1968), extra time (1960, 2016), penalty shoot-out (1976) or golden goal (1996, 2000).
[2] The winners are awarded a replica of the trophy (the original remains with UEFA), while the losing finalists and semi-finalists are presented with a plaque.
[3] Gold and silver medals are awarded to the players of the winning and losing finalists respectively. [4]Germany and Spain are the most successful teams in the history of the tournament, winning three times each. France has won the competition twice (the only cham;ionship team to have won the competition more than once), while Yugoslavia qualified for the final twice without success. Greece, Netherlands and Denmark each won the European Championship on their only appearances in the final, the latter having replaced Yugoslavia on the eve of the 1992 tournament.

[3] [4] In honour of Delaunay, the trophy awarded to the champions is named after him. [5] The 1960 tournament, held in France, had four teams competing in the finals out of 17 that entered the competition. [6] It was won by the Soviet Union, beating Yugoslavia 21 in a tense final in Paris. [7] Spain withdrew from its quarter-final match against the USSR because of two political protests. [8] Of the 17 teams that entered the qualifying tournament, notable absentees were England, the Netherlands, West Germany and Italy.

[12]The tournament format stayed the same for the 1968 tournament, championahip and won by Italy. [13] [14] For the first and only time a match was decided on a winnesr toss (the semi-final Italy vs.
Soviet Union) [15] and the final went to a replay, after the match against Yugoslavia finished 11. [16] Italy won the replay 20. [17] More teams entered this tournament (31), a testament to its euroopean popularity. [18]Belgium hosted the 1972 tournament, which West Germany won, beating the USSR 30 in the final, with goals coming from Gerd Muller (twice) and Herbert Wimmer at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels. [19] This tournament would provide a taste of things to come, as the German side contained many of the key members of the 1974 FIFA World Winndrs Champions.
[20] [21]The 1976 tournament in Yugoslavia was the last in which only four teams took part in the final tournament, and the last in which the hosts had to qualify. Czechoslovakia beat West Germany in the newly introduced penalty shootout. After seven successful conversions, Uli Hoene? missed, leaving Czechoslovakian Antonin Panenka with the opportunity to score and win the tournament.
